Join Russia and USA by Rail Tunnels under the Bering Strait?

Join Russia and USA by Rail Tunnels under the Bering Strait?

Russia’s Urals oil has been over $100 a barrel for a year now.
The country’s budgets are balanced. Debt is low. Savings are piling up. Russians are getting their pre-recession mojo back.
On the consumer end, sales of foreign cars made in Russia jumped 90 percent during the first quarter of 2012 over last year.
In the Kremlin, leaders are thinking big again.
In rapid succession, the government leaked a plan to create a “super agency” to develop the Russian Far East; President-elect Vladimir Putin vowed to spend $17 billion a year for new and improved railroads, and Vladimir Yakunin, president of Russian Railways, promoted a think big plan — a rail and tunnel link connecting Russia and the United States.
“It is not a dream,” Yakunin, a close ally of Mr. Putin, told reporters last week. “I am convinced that Russia needs the development of areas of the Far East, Kamchatka. I think that the decision to build must be made within the next three-five years.”
Next year, Russia’s railroad czar will open one big leg on the trip toward the Bering Strait – an 800 kilometer rail line to Yakutsk, capital of Sakha Republic, a mineral rich area larger than Argentina.

But the 270,000 residents of Yakutsk do not want to live at the dead end of a spur line. They dream of five kilometer long freight trains rolling past their city, carrying Chinese goods to North America, and North American coal and manufactured products to Russia and China.
From their city, 450 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, passenger tickets could be sold west to London, and east to New York.
With the West’s swelling population of aging affluent retirees, what better gift for Mom and Dad than a one-month train trip, rolling across the International Dateline, traveling by rail three quarters of the way around the world? A TransBering rail voyage would make the TransSiberian and the TransCanada look like short hops.
To push thinking along, Yakutsk hosted a trans Bering rail conference last August. Engineers showed charts indicating that the tunnels under the Bering Strait would be 103 kilometers long, about twice the length of the tunnel under the English Channel. Unlike Europe’s “Chunnel,” there are two islands along the Bering route – geographical factors that would ease construction and allow for ventilation and emergency access.
For now, the only trains in Alaska run from Seward on the coast 760 kilometers into the interior, carrying tourists to Denali National Park and freight to two military bases. Photo: Fyodor Soloview
A trans Bering rail link was first seriously proposed by Czar Nicholas II in 1905. One century later, with the rise of China and the explosion of Asian manufacturing, some Russian economists believe that the day is near when a rail link to North America up would be economically viable.
The current price tag for the missing 10,000 kilometers, tunnel included: $100 billion. Freight fees are estimated at $11 billion a year.
Russian Railways estimates that a Bering Strait tunnel could eventually handle 3 percent of the world’s freight cargo. Yakunin says that China is interested in the project. At a railway meeting in Moscow Thursday, Mr. Putin said that freight traffic on a main Siberian line, the Baikal-Amur Mainline, is expected to nearly triple by 2020.
To critics who worry about harsh winter weather, Russian Railways notes that since 1915, the company has been running passenger and freight trains year round to Murmansk, located 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The proposed route for a tunnel under the Bering Strait would pass 50 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle.                                                                                                         For a tunnel linking two continents, support has to be generated on the North American side. In Alaska, Fyodor Soloview, a native of Moscow, recently formed InterBering, a private group to lobby for rail construction to the Bering Strait.
“We can ship cargo between two the continents by rail,” Soloview said by telephone Thursday from his office in Anchorage. “Once the Bering tunnel is built, it will convert the entire world to different thinking.”
Yakunin estimates that the Russian side of a trans Bering railroad would take 10 to 15 years to build. That could fit into the political calendar of his friend Mr. Putin. On May 7, Mr. Putin will be inaugurated for a new six year term. He has left open the possibility of running in 2018 for another six year term.
So Russian Railways may have the political cover for another 12 years.
The question is whether oil prices will stay high enough to build a tunnel linking America and Asia.
If so, Washington’s diplomatic reset with Moscow could be welded in steel.

Xi to Obama: South China Sea isles ours

Xi to Obama: South China Sea isles ours                                   © Provided by The Philippine Star                                                                      Xi to Obama: South China Sea isles ours                                      BARACK OBAMA SHOWS COWARDICE AGAIN BY NOT DEFENDING OUR ALLIES THE PHILIPPINES NATIONAL TERRITORIAL INTERESTS                                                           WASHINGTON – Islands in the South China Sea have been Chinese territory “since ancient times,” Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Barack Obama on Friday during their meeting after the latter voiced concern over massive land reclamation and militarization in disputed waters.

“We have the right to uphold our own territorial sovereignty and lawful legitimate maritime rights and interests,” Xi said.
“Relevant construction activity that China is undertaking in the Nansha Islands does not target or impact any country and there is no intention to militarize,” Xi said, using the Chinese name for the disputed Spratly archipelago.
Xi also reiterated that China is committed to freedom of navigation in the sea and to resolving disputes through dialogue. He said Beijing and Washington had a shared interest in this regard.
Their White House meeting touched on a wide range of issues including human rights, climate change and cyber espionage.
“I conveyed to President Xi our significant concerns over land reclamation, construction and the militarization of disputed areas, which makes it harder for countries in the region to resolve disagreements peacefully,” Obama said at a joint press conference.
He spoke with Xi at his side during their joint news conference in the White House Rose Garden. The Chinese leader is on his first state visit to the US.
“I encouraged a resolution between claimants in these areas. We are not a claimant, we just want to make sure that the rules of the road are upheld,” Obama said.
China claims almost all of the South China Sea and the West Philippine Sea but neighbors Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have rival claims.
But Xi stressed China’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea.
“We’re committed to respecting and upholding the freedom of navigation and overflight that countries enjoy according to international law,” Xi said.
Obama said China’s dispute with neighboring countries over ownership of islands, shoals, reefs and outcrops should be resolved peacefully.
He also reiterated the right of all countries to freedom of navigation and overflight and to unimpeded commerce.
“The United States will continue to sail, fly and operate anywhere that international law allows,” Obama said.
The US position is that land reclamation and construction of artificial islands destabilize the region and should stop.
Before their talks, Obama – in an official welcome ceremony – said the US welcomes the rise of a China that is stable, prosperous and peaceful.
“I believe that our two great nations, if we work together, have an unmatched ability to shape the course of the century ahead,” he said.
Xi said he came to the US to promote peace and advance cooperation and both sides should be broad-minded about their differences and disagreements.
A White House fact sheet on areas where China and the United States are working together did not mention the South China Sea.
Admiral Harry Harris, commander of US forces in the Pacific, told the Aspen Security Forum in July that China was building hangers on one of the reefs – Kagitingan or Fiery Cross – that appeared to be for tactical fighter aircraft.
Washington analysts and US officials say the militarization of the islands has already begun and the only question is how much military hardware China will install.
US experts say satellite photos from early this month also show China was carrying out dredging work around the artificial islands, a month after saying it had stopped.
Harris said last week that China’s runway building and further militarization of the artificial islands was of “great concern” and posed a threat to all countries in the region.
Jane’s Defense Weekly published new satellite images of Kagitingan taken on Sept. 20 that it said showed China had completed the runway on the reef and was moving closer to making it operational.
Jane’s said completion of the runway could allow China to accelerate construction of infrastructure and to start air patrols over the disputed islands.

Filipino pilgrim among dead in Mecca stampede

Filipino pilgrim among dead in Mecca stampede                                                                            Filipino pilgrim among dead in Mecca stampede

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A Filipino pilgrim was among the dead in a tragic stampede during the annual Muslim pilgrimage at the hajj thatclaimed over 700 lives Thursday, September 24, the foreign affairs department said.
In a post on Twitter on Friday night, September 25, Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson Charles Jose said, "The personal circumstances of the victim are being withheld on the request of the family."
The stampede occured during a ritual called stoning of the devil.
After news of the tragedy broke out, the DFA said the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah has been verifying reports that one local Filipino pilgrim died in the stampede in Mecca.
Saudi authorities have yet to provide a breakdown of the nationalities of the 717 pilgrims killed in stampede, but several foreign countries have announced the deaths of nationals.
Here is the toll given by foreign officials and media so far, as compiled by Agence France-Presse. It does not include the Filipino victim yet:

What happened
The stampede began at around 9 am (0600 GMT), shortly after the civil defense said on Twitter it was dealing with a "crowding" incident in Mina.
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims had converged on Mina to throw pebbles at one of 3 walls representing Satan, for the last major ritual of the hajj, which officially ends on Sunday.
Interior ministry spokesman General Mansur al-Turki said the stampede was caused when "a large number of pilgrims were in motion at the same time" at an intersection of two streets in Mina.
"The great heat and fatigue of the pilgrims contributed to the large number of victims," he said. Temperatures in Mina had reached 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) Thursday. – with Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com

BREAKING: Obama Admin Had Tapes Proving Bergdahl Deserted and Joined Taliban – Ignored Them at Trial

BREAKING: Obama Admin Had Tapes Proving Bergdahl Deserted and Joined Taliban – Ignored Them at Trial

Deserter Bowe Bergdahl with the Taliban.
Retired Colonel David Hunt broke the news tonight on The O’Reilly Factor that the the Obama administration had proof that Bowe Bergdahl deserted to the Taliban.
The Obama administration did not use the evidence in his trial.
Colonel David Hunt explained it tonight:
Col. David Hunt (retired): June 30, 2009, Bergdahl deserts his post in southeast Afghanistan. July 1st and 2nd, in a standard briefing to a commander of his unit, Fourth Brigade ot the 25th Infantry division, we have tapes of Taliban talking on Bergdahl’s phone saying that Bergdahl wanted to join them. And we have the Taliban on their own phones talking about Bergdahl trying to join them. This information was known July 2nd on and yet we still traded him for five terrorists, had a White House ceremony and now we’ve taken two years since he’s come back to do something which takes 90 days. The government has not yet and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to even use these tapes against Sgt Bergdahl.
Bill O’Reilly: How did they get the tapes?
Col. Hunt: It doesn’t make sense. None of it makes any sense on Bergdahl.
Bill O’Reilly: How did the government get the tapes?
Col. David Hunt: There are programs, we’ve been doing it since World War II, in which we listen to the enemy, and people who are speaking Pashtun and any language the Taliban in that section are using, were listening because they were told to and they were also listening to Bergdahl’s phone. What they heard was the Taliban on Bergdahl’s phone because he had joined them by then. So it’s a military program.
Bill O’Reilly: So, once again the tapes say that Bergdahl deserted and wanted to join the Taliban.
Col. Hunt: Yes the tapes are available. The government’s not using them.
The Obama administration knows these tapes are out there yet chose not to use the evidence during Bergdahl’s trial.
It’s just the latest Obama scandal.
